However, recent studies by the Italian Heritage Authority and the University of Genoa have revealed that these are actually gnammas — natural cavities caused by erosion typical of periglacial mountain zones, which differ in shape and origin from true cup marks.

Rocca la Meja (2,831 m) is an imposing mountain in the Cottian Alps, located in the upper Maira Valley, within the municipality of Canosio. It rises above the plateaus of Gardetta, Margherina, and Bandia, standing out for its sharp rocky ridge composed of vertically layered dolomitic limestone. Its pyramid-shaped profile is clearly visible from both the south and north. The normal ascent route follows the southern face and requires mountaineering skills. From the summit, one enjoys a sweeping panorama of the Western Alps.
